Little Lamb Child Care
Formerly Happy Tots

A place to explore, discover, create and learn.

Mission Statement

Little Lamb Child Care provides high quality childcare in a safe, healthy, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.  Staff members foster a positive sense of self in the children, which will enable them to feel secure and to be able to grow, learn, experiment, and ask questions.

The Little Lamb Child Care Center builds a partnership between parents and teachers, with the understanding that parents are their child’s first teachers.  Open dialogue, mutual support, and respect are the base of the relationship between parents and staff.  We recognize and respect the diversity of our families and know that each family will have its own traditions and philosophy on child rearing.

Our Philosophy

We believe that each child is a unique individual with his or her own ideas.  Our role as educators of young children is to ensure that each child has the opportunity to reach success and to provide support in a facilitative role.

We believe that children learn through their own experiences and when curiosity and wonder are allowed and encouraged, a child will develop at their own rate.

We believe that there should be a presentation of possibilities from which curriculum will emerge.  We value the process by which each child comes to learn, and believe that each child has a voice through which learning will thrive.  We believe children should not be forced to participate in an activity that they are not interested in, rather, through observation and a clear understanding of who the child is and where their interests lie; we should provide multiple entry points.  We encourage learning through open-ended communication with the children and allowing them to ask questions.  We value learning through experimentation and reworking and believe that by providing open spaces and allowing children large blocks of unstructured play and opportunities to explore with an abundance of materials, a child’s creativity will thrive.

We believe that childhood is a special time of life that should not be hurried and that it should be a time of life when individual uniqueness is discovered, explored, and encouraged.    The world is new to the child and we value keeping an open mind and realizing that the day is filled with teachable moments and that everything is curriculum.  We believe that childhood is the time of life that forms the foundation for the future of the young adult and adult years.  It is a short but very important span of years, a critical time in the formation of the creative and thinking mind.  It is often a time that is hurried and so scheduled with play dates, baseball, and dance lessons that it often goes unrecognized how important the unstructured play is to the formation of a healthy, independent child.    We believe this time of life to be the critical foundation for further learning as the child grows.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on developmentally appropriate activities and builds on the child’s previous learning and experiences.  Children need to explore and then express their ideas through imaginative play, discussion, art or block building.  Teachers plan the curriculum based on the child’s strengths and needs.  Children learn through hands-on experiences and play is used to foster the growth of basic concepts.

Imaginative Play

Play is the academics of children.  It is the vehicle by which children create and make meaning.  Play is purposeful, exceedingly important, and serious.  Activities chosen by the child are treated as important explorations.  The developmental interaction approach emphasizes the inseparability of the child’s emotional life from his or her intellectual and physical development.

Socialization

The child’s emotional and fantasy is the key of life.  Social interactions are of major importance.  We consider it vital that children learn to be aware of their emotions, to identify and talk about them, to express their needs and problems and to become able to negotiate their resolution with other children and caregivers.  The teacher’s role is to facilitate the formation of friendships by encouraging and helping to negotiate interactions between children.

Outdoor Play

A quality environment is well planned and invites children to learn and grow.  Our environment is designed to reflect the importance of play in children’s life and development.  We have 3 acres of beautiful land where children can run, breath in fresh air and explore all that nature has to offer.   We have rolling hills, trees, plants and flowers and even a vegetable garden.  Come up on the terrace and be a part of the Radio Terrace history.

Program Goals

The Little Lamb Child Care Center’s primary goal is to provide high quality child care in a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment.  The program is designed to facilitate each child’s emotional, social, cognitive, and physical growth.  Through play, which is the universal language of children, the Center fosters each child’s individual needs.  Our infant, toddler, and preschool programs abound in open-ended material: water, sand, clay, blocks, puzzles, art materials, and the like.  Children use the same materials at different ages in increasingly elaborate ways.  Free play time is generous, and even planned activities may sometimes give way to the child’s spontaneous interests.   Early childhood centers have changed so much over the years and we are so much more than day care - we partner with you in the foundational early years.
